Donald Trump strikes diesel deal with Russia as Volodymyr Zelensky warns US about ‘giving gift to Vladimir Putin’

US President Donald Trump has secured a deal with Vladimir Putin to “immediately release” diesel into the global market.

Mr Trump confirmed the agreement with the Russian President will allow the release of 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately, followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and another million after that.

The deal, announced on Friday, is the latest effort from the US President to lower fuel prices for the country.

Mr Trump spent months being faced with the political consequences of the Iran war, which began in February, and its impact on global energy prices.

Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, Mr Trump praised the deal and its impact on fuel prices for America and “the world”.

He said: “I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month of November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter.

“Additionally, based on the condition of their Diesel Refineries, Russia will then deliver, within a short period of time, 3,000,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel.

“Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy, Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST!

“Lower prices for Americans, especially our Great Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers, is my Greatest Priority.

“This is a very big and important announcement. Additionally, it must be understood, that Iran will not have a Nuclear Weapon! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Mr Trump has also successfully pressured G7 nations into releasing 100 million barrels of oil and diesel from stockpiles to help ease supply concerns and previously supported calls for a ban on diesel exports from the US.

Hitting out at the deal, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky warned Mr Trump of “gift giving” to President Putin.

“Allowing Russia to sell petroleum products is an investment in a war that needs to be ended, not prolonged. A real de-escalation with Russia is needed, and in a mirror format.

“We rely on fair support from America for our defence of lives, our defence of people in Ukraine, and on a correspondingly strong conversation from the United States with Russia. A strong one, not a weak one.”

Responding to the deal in the UK, a spokesman for the Labour Government said it will “continue to work closely with international partners” to “ensure Ukraine has the military and financial support it needs to defend itself.”

The UK Government spokesman said: “The UK’s position could not be clearer.

“We will maintain pressure on Russia through the toughest sanctions regime ever imposed by the UK, increasing the cost of Putin’s aggression and supporting efforts to secure a just and lasting peace.

“Ukraine has repeatedly demonstrated it is serious about peace, but Russia has repeatedly rejected full and partial ceasefires while continuing attacks on Ukrainian civilians and energy.

“Russia could end this war today. We remain committed to supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes and to working with partners to bring about a durable peace.”
