‘I’m a travel expert who visits the UK every autumn – there are 3 top picks for a cosy escape’

The UK takes on a new charm in autumn, with vibrant, colourful leaves and misty mornings providing the perfect backdrop for exploring the country.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a travel expert shared three areas worth visiting as the seasons start to change.

Vummy Kihaule, a travel expert with more than 10 years’ experience designing tailor-made journeys across Africa, prides himself on putting together great holidays. And in autumn, he reckons the UK is the best place to be.

He told GB News: “Autumn in the UK is something I know personally. I make a trip every October or November, and it has become one of those habits that just stuck.”

The expert explained that classic staycation destinations are popular for a reason, recommending the Lake District, Cornwall and the Cotswolds as places to visit this season.

He said: “When thinking about where to go in the UK during autumn, the first thing most people think of is the Lake District. And again, this is no coincidence.

“I walk the fells in the Lake District every October, and the contrast in numbers of tourists compared to summer is noticeable.

“Not only do the tourists dwindle off quickly, but the scenery takes on a new beauty as well — the hillsides take on hues of gold, rust and burnt orange and provide many opportunities to see some of England’s most beautiful vistas by themselves.”

Indeed, GB News visited Keswick to find out why the quieter Lake District town is one of the best places for a UK break.

Cornwall is another hugely popular staycation spot, with its sandy beaches and coastal walks making it particularly impressive during the summer months. But this is not the only time worth visiting, according to the expert.

Kihaule said: “Cornwall is a great destination for autumn, but it may not be for the same reasons as people visit in the summer. While Cornwall loses the throngs of sun-bathing holidaymakers, its coastline takes on a wilder quality.

“Stormy weather creates dramatic wave action at the coast while the cool sea air fills your lungs. Cornwall is a very different destination in autumn than it is in the summer months.”

Finally, he recommended the Cotswolds. This region really comes alive in autumn and winter, with guests able to enjoy scenic walks ending at cosy pubs, all against a quintessentially British backdrop.

He said: “Those villages already photograph beautifully; however, autumn provides a quality that summer does not. Smoke drifts from the chimneys of the village homes and leaves cover the cobblestone streets.

“The local shops and pubs are quiet, with their owners returning home after a long summer season, and for the most part the area seems to be a functioning community once again instead of just a tourist destination.”
