Jack Wilshere shoves Barnsley boss as handshake clash sparks melee after Luton win

Jack Wilshere was involved in a touchline confrontation with Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel after Luton’s 2-1 victory, with their post-match handshake descending into a shove and a melee between the benches.

Luton secured all three points in Tuesday night’s League One meeting at Kenilworth Road.

Goals from Mads Juel Andersen and Nahki Wells put the hosts in control before Makenzie Kirk reduced the deficit.

Barnsley were unable to find an equaliser and suffered their sixth defeat of the season.

But attention turned to the technical areas after the final whistle, when Wilshere and Stendel’s exchange escalated into a confrontation.

The former Arsenal midfielder, 34, shook hands with his opposite number before the pair began arguing.

Wilshere then pulled his hand away, pointed towards Stendel and shoved the Barnsley boss as the disagreement intensified.

Members of both benches became involved before the situation was brought under control.

What is wilshere doing here then? Getting all margy at the ref then takes it out on Stendel. Failed Arsenal Golden Boy, but the ego is still there 🤣 https://t.co/8iss9NFEUn

Wilshere and his players subsequently went to applaud the Luton supporters following their victory.

Despite the angry scenes, both managers sought to take the heat out of the incident when questioned afterwards, with neither suggesting there was a lasting dispute.

Wilshere praised Barnsley’s approach and insisted the confrontation was something the two sides could put behind them.

“They want to win, we want to win, massive respect for what they are trying to do there,” he said.

“I know they have not got the result but I could see what they are trying to do.

“They are a tough team to play against, they have some good players and yeah we got the win in the end.

“It got a bit heated but you shake hands at the end and everyone moves on.”

Stendel, 52, offered a measured assessment, describing the disagreement as a misunderstanding rather than a major flashpoint between the managers.

“It was a misunderstanding between me and Jack Wilshere,” he said.

“But I tried to talk with him (after the game) and I think it’s not a big thing.”

The footage nevertheless prompted comparisons on social media with the infamous handshake confrontation between Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge in 2022.

That incident followed Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham, with the two managers becoming embroiled in an argument during their post-match exchange.

Supporters watching the scenes at Kenilworth Road were quick to draw parallels, even as Wilshere and Stendel played down what had happened.

“Like Tuchel and Conte off of Temu,” one social media user wrote.

Another posted: “Conte and Tuchel eat your hearts out.”

On the pitch, Andersen’s opener and Wells’ second proved enough to secure the points for Wilshere’s side, despite Kirk giving Barnsley hope of salvaging a result. The visitors’ response ultimately fell short, leaving Stendel to reflect on another league defeat.
