Prime Minister Andy Burnham has promised to take Britain in a “new direction” as he arrives in Liverpool for his first Labour Party conference as PM.
Speaking to the crowd, Mr Burnham said: “I will set out a clear new direction for the country, and from that comes the hope, people able to have hope again, that things will improve, that life will get better, and it will.
“You can see the change in this city led by Mayor Steve Rotherham. It’s brilliant, isn’t it? You see what’s happening. Wonderful to see Liverpool growing faster than the rest of the UK economy. How many times in our lifetimes have we been able to say that?
“But we’ll set out a plan to get that growth going right around the country. Good growth in every postcode, hope in every heart. That’s what the Labour Party under my leadership will be all about. It’s wonderful to be in Liverpool with you all and we’re going to have a great week.”
