Darts star apologises and is at risk of punishment after making ‘inappropriate’ comment about women

Darts star Mensur Suljovic has been forced to apologise after making an “inappropriate” comment about women.

The Austrian could face punishment for his behaviour towards Englishman Ross Smith during the Swiss Darts Trophy in Basel.

The PDC referred his actions to the Darts Regulation Authority after he threw his arms in the air to rile up the crowd as Smith threw for the win.

The action is against darts etiquette and Suljovic went on to win the controversial affair 6-5.

Suljovic celebrated by punching the air, while Smith kept his composure to shake his hand and the officials’ hands before heading offstage.

The Austrian spoke on stage in German after the match and appeared to have said: “What’s his problem? He complains like a woman.

“In England, the fans are against me. Everywhere, they’re against me. And now he suddenly complains.”

Suljovic then issued a statement on social media apologising for his actions and words.

He wrote: “I was really caught up in the emotion of the moment.

“I wanted to get the crowd on my side, and in doing so, I didn’t fully realise that Ross was throwing his match darts.

“In hindsight, I understand that the timing was unfortunate and was perceived as unfair. I would like to apologise to Ross for that.

“For me, Ross is one of the best darts players in the world, and I have great respect for him and his achievements.”

Regarding his comments on stage, Suljovic said: “My statement about women in the interview was also completely inappropriate.

“I should never have said that.

“I would like to expressly apologise to all women for it.”

Following the match, the PDC said: “We can confirm that Mensur Suljovic’s conduct at last weekend’s Swiss Darts Trophy has been referred to the Darts Regulation Authority, which has acknowledged receipt of the referral.”

After the game, Smith said: “I don’t blame Mensur for me losing that game.

“I missed two match darts. Simple as that.

“Obviously it’s impossible for me to know what he’s doing behind my back when I’m throwing apart from the crowd’s response.

“Karma will come around.”
